This personal project is a lyric video for “Unsaid Emily”, a song from the TV show “Julie & the Phantoms”. The song follows the story of Luke, and his regrets with his mother, Emily, after he suddenly dies and doesn’t get to apologise and tell her he loves her.
I wanted to capture the story between Luke and his mother, and thus, used handwriting and crumpled paper to show his thoughts and how he never got to say them. I did this by handwriting all the lyrics, scanning them and then animating them in After Effects.
This project was only my second ever creation in After Effects, so I wanted to push myself and learn new skills, while telling a story, which I believe I did.
Note: I did follow a YouTube tutorial that showed how to animate the handwriting, however, I did change it to match my style and project and I used my own assets. The crumpled paper and paper texture used are from Freepik.com.
Throughout this project, I was able to challenge myself and I really enjoyed the overall process. I used different aspects, such as masks, the pen tool, wiggle expressions, strokes, keyframes and easy ease during the creation process, as you can see in the images below. When handwriting the lyrics, I also thought of the typographic composition, as I wanted the words to visually communicate the lyrics through the motion design. I also wanted to ensure each line of lyrics varied from the previous one.
