A self-directed brief, based on nostalgia and growing up in the 2000s.
“So Yesterday” magazine draws inspiration from collage, craft and my love of telling stories. The purpose of it is to uniquely capture the positive memories from a forgotten past in a physical format. It also allows readers to be taken back in time, as it acts as a physical flashback to the past, when magazines were popular. This tactile medium is aimed at combining joy with purpose and pays homage to the style of teen magazines from the 2000s to demonstrate an authentic 2000s brand personality.
The story behind the creation of this magazine is that I have always loved the 2000s and magazines, and I used to draw magazines when I was younger. My dream was to work at a magazine as a designer and writer. So I thought it’d be perfect to create something that is a combination of my interests and passions.
During the creation process of this magazine, I have used many different materials to help create elements for various pages, such as a typewriter, lino squares, ink pads, construction paper, crayons, pencils, paint and even coffee to stain paper. In total, there are 70 pages in the magazine containing different articles (which were written by me), quizzes, visuals and posters. I also conducted surveys and research throughout the process for reader submissions and to find out what people want to read.
